Deadline
set for brick campaign
EBENSBURG --
Don’t miss your chance to purchase a personalized
brick to be placed in Ebensburg’s Gazebo Park in the center of town! A
deadline of May 20, 2005 has been set. “This is an opportunity
for everyone to help personalize the park,” said Christine Strugala, Community
Development Director. “It has deteriorated over the years and we feel
it is time to fix it up, especially with our Streetscape project set to get
underway soon.” Gazebo Park was erected in 1995 with personalized bricks
and beautiful landscaping. It has helped to make downtown Ebensburg an attractive
place to work, shop and visit. In an effort to restore the park, the Borough
is replacing the existing bricks and selling new ones to help defray the cost.
The original bricks that are currently in the park will be replaced at no charge.
Personalized bricks are available in two sizes and prices: 4’x8’
with up to three lines of engraving for $50 and 12’x12’ with up
to four lines of engraving for $100. Engravings on the smaller bricks may be
no more than 12 letters long per line, including spaces between words. A maximum
of 14 letters per line, including spaces, may be requested for larger bricks.
Interested individuals can obtain an order form on the Borough’s website
at www.ebensburgpa.com
or by calling (814) 472-8414. Additional improvements to Gazebo Park will include
re-wiring the park so that the outlets are more conveniently located, replacing
some of the lights, planters and shrubs, as well as, taking down the deteriorated
fence around the park to help open the corner up. Borough Council has authorized
advertising for bids for the rehabilitation of the park and purchase of replacement
bricks.
Volunteers
sought for borough events
EBENSBURG -- The Ebensburg
Area Business Commission and Main Street Partnership are in need of volunteers
to help with many events and projects throughout the year. “We are looking
for dedicated workers to help with our Art In Bloom art show, Wheels & Wings,
Homecoming, PotatoFest and our Christmas events,” said Christine Strugala,
Community Development Director. “Volunteering is a great way to get involved
in the community and meet new friends.” A Volunteer Night will be held
on Thursday, May 19th at 7pm in the Community Room of the Ebensburg
Borough Building, 300 West High Street. All are welcome and light refreshments
will be provided. For more information, please call (814) 472-8414 or email

Overcoming
language barriers
-- We received the following story from Christine, one of
our regular contributors to the site. We thought it was a nice story and wondered
if any of our visitors could help with their project.
--Christine writes, "In December of 2004, I received a letter from a gentleman
from France. Written in complete French, I attempted to translate it (I took
French in school). We thought that it would be a great class project to try
to translate the letter and possibly send a response back in French to this
gentleman. Dana Hurley Schweitzer, Central Cambria High School French
teacher, agreed to translate this letter with her French three and four classes.
The gentleman is looking for information on the town of Coupon, because that
is where his grandfather lived for many years. Anyway, I have now decided to
have the classes work on writing a response letter back to him in French. This
is a perfect example of how to overcome barriers and help each other. The project
is also a wonderful way to get our youth involved in current issues and the
day-to-day obstacles in a work environment.
-- If you have any information that can help them with their project, please
let us know and we can get you in touch with Christine.
