Relief
Effort for Hurricane Victims Receives Tremendous Support
NORTHERN CAMBRIA --
What started as an email brainstorming session has turned in to a well-supported
relief effort for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
-- Watching news broadcasts of the horrendous aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
and feeling unable to do much to help from thousands of miles away, members
of the Northern Cambria Parent-Teacher-Student Organization started to email
each other suggesting that the group organize an event to raise money for the
victims. After several ideas were considered, they decided upon a Because We
Care Basket Raffle.
--
“The response
is tremendous,” said the NC PTSO interim president Cate Planisky-Himes.
“We emailed our members and all of the teachers of our district asking
them to put together baskets for a raffle. They must have thought the idea was
great because the word spread fast within our community and we have many people
and businesses outside of the school donating baskets and prize items as well.”
As of Monday morning – just one week after the initial email – nearly
60 baskets were donated with more being promised by the end of the week in time
for the public display at the Contres-Greer Social Hall this Sunday,
September 18, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
--
“It started
just as an event that would take place during Open House this week at the schools,
but when we saw the overwhelming outside interest, we decided to take it into
the community and invited the community to participate.”
--
The baskets will
be on display at the Elementary-Middle School Auditorium for all three evenings
of Open House. Initially, it was proposed to move the baskets to the high school
building for Open House there Wednesday evening, but because of the overwhelming
turnout of donated baskets, moving them back and forth between the schools would
be too much for the limited number of PTSO volunteers. Parents and teachers
are welcomed to buy chances from 6 to 8 p.m. during Open House Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday, September 13, 14, and 15, at the EMS Auditorium. The community
is invited to participate during the public display on Sunday. Chances will
cost $6 for 25, or $10 for 50.
--
Baskets can still
be donated up until Saturday and arrangements for pick-up or delivery can be
made by calling 814-951-0105.
Affordable
apartment locator now online
-- The Pennsylvania
Housing Finance Agency has developed a Web-based apartment listing service
to help consumers find affordable rental housing in the Commonwealth. The Pennsylvania
Affordable Apartment Locator registry will make otherwise hard to find information
about affordable apartments, vacancies and accessibility features available
on the Internet. Providing the most current information about apartment availability
will be a great marketing tool for owners and property managers and will offer
a tremendous benefit to consumers searching for apartments.
Please look here for more
details on registering apartments. If you have and questions or comments please
contact us at aptlocatorpa@phfa.org or (717) 780-1856.
Potatofest
applications available
EBENSBURG -- Attention food and craft vendors! Vendor applications
for this year’s Ebensburg PotatoFest are now available. As was previously
released, in an effort to EVENTUALLY become a juried show, the date of the 14th
annual Ebensburg PotatoFest has been changed to September 24,
2005.
-- “This is a community festival,” said Christine Strugala, Community
Development Director. “In its fourteenth year, the date change signifies
a step in the right direction, looking to attract more craft vendors.”
Although more crafters are being sought, a select group of resellers will still
be selected to take part in the festival. In addition, food vendors are always
a welcomed addition.
-- Applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis. The registration deadline
is August 15, 2005. Interested vendors can download an application
and festival guidelines from the PotatoFest web site at www.potatofest.com
or call Christine Strugala at (814) 472-8414.
-- Ebensburg PotatoFest is sponsored by the Ebensburg Area Business Commission
and Main Street Partnership.

Silent
Basket Auction to benefit those affected by Hurricane Katrina
-- As we here in Northern Cambria and the surrounding communities fell
back into the routine of another school year, our fellow Americans
in the southern part of our nation have had their lives ripped apart by
Hurricane Katrina. Seeing the devastation and desparation caused by this tremendous
natural disaster, one can't help feel completely helpless. But we can help.
-- That is why the members of the Northern Cambria Parent-Teacher-Student Organization
(NC PTSO) have decide to organize a Silent Basket Auction with all
proceeds going to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Although this fundraiser
is being organized by the NC PTSO, it will it hoped to be a Northern
Cambria Schoolwide Effort.
-- To make this a succesful event, we are asking everyone to help our efforts by
donating and/or preparing a basket. We are hoping to have the baskets displayed
during Open House (Sept. 13-15) and also at a location in town for the general
public later that weekend. Drawing will be held the evening of Sunday,
Sept. 18. We are also looking into donating our proceeds to an organization
that will match our funds, therefore doubling our contributions. (Plans
are still being fine tuned, but we wanted to provide you with enough time to
prepare baskets. When details are finalized, it will be sent along and
publicized.)
-- Baskets can be
donated on behalf of yourself, your sports team, academic group, civic organization,
church group, business, workplace, or in memory of a loved one... Make as many
as you like. If you would like to just donate money... we can prepare several
Money or Lottery Ticket Baskets with monies collected.
-- If you are willing to prepare a basket, please email ncptso@ncsd.k12.pa.us or
call 951-0105 to be notified of further details, such as drop off location, as
they develop. Baskets should be prepared by Monday, Sept. 12. (prepare a container for
it as well.) PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE YOU KNOW OF THIS SPECIAL EFFORT.
-- For those who may not know how this works, baskets packed with various items are
displayed with a corresponding container placed in front of it. People
are invited to buy a whole bunch of tickets, like those ones bought for 50/50
at football games. They then drop their tickets into the container for the basket
that they would like to win. At the end of the event, a winner is drawn for
each basket. The winners will be notified afterwards.
-- If you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, please email ncptso@ncsd.k12.pa.us or
call 951-0105.
